C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa

The C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa offers families a hands-on, immersive experience that combines Native American history, archaeology, and nature exploration. Located at a prehistoric Mississippian mound site, the museum provides visitors with a chance to learn about the indigenous people who lived in the area over 1,000 years ago. Families can begin their visit by exploring the main exhibits, which feature artifacts, pottery, tools, and dioramas depicting the daily life, trade, and cultural practices of the Mississippian people. These exhibits offer children and adults alike a visually engaging way to understand the significance of the site, with lifelike models and real artifacts providing a tangible connection to the past.

The museum also emphasizes interactive learning, particularly through its archaeological activities. Families can experience the thrill of discovery in the museum’s archaeology lab, where children can sort and analyze real artifacts recovered from the site. The museum’s popular "Dig It" excavation program allows kids to participate in a simulated excavation, uncovering replica artifacts and learning how archaeologists piece together history. These hands-on experiences provide a fun, educational way for kids to learn about archaeology and the importance of preserving historical sites, making the past feel immediate and exciting.

Outside the museum, families can explore the Native American Nature Trail, which winds through the surrounding forest, featuring interpretive signs about native plants, wildlife, and traditional medicinal gardens. The trail, combined with tours of the ancient mounds, offers a peaceful and educational way to connect with nature while learning about the Mississippian culture. Additionally, special events such as Archaeology Day and Family Fun Days offer unique opportunities for families to engage with the museum through hands-on activities, guided tours, and cultural demonstrations.
